At Spider Platform Hire, we believe in showing up for people – in business, in our communities, and especially in the moments that matter most. That’s why we’re proud to support the Wolf Hirschhorn Syndrome Trust (WHST) – a charity that’s helping families across the UK face one of life’s toughest challenges with strength, hope, and support.
What is Wolf Hirschhorn Syndrome?
Wolf Hirschhorn Syndrome (WHS) is a rare genetic disorder caused by a deletion on the short arm of chromosome 4. It affects approximately 1 in 50,000 births and can lead to a range of health and developmental issues. These may include:
-
Seizures
-
Intellectual disabilities
-
Growth delays
-
Low muscle tone
-
Distinctive facial features
-
Feeding difficulties and speech challenges
But beyond the medical terms and clinical descriptions, WHS is about real people – babies, children, young adults – and the families who love and care for them.
The Story of WHST
When parents receive a WHS diagnosis, they’re often left with a whirlwind of emotions and very few answers. That was the reality in 1994 when a small group of parents came together to support each other and share knowledge.
At the heart of that movement was Chris Hilder, a woman with unwavering dedication and a huge heart. Chris knew that no family should face something like this alone. She helped form the Wolf Hirschhorn Syndrome Trust – and nearly three decades on, that work continues.
Today, WHST offers:
-
Support groups and events
-
Trusted resources for newly diagnosed families
-
A welcoming community for sharing stories and advice
-
Campaigns to raise awareness and promote research
More Than a Condition
One of the most important things WHST reminds us of is this: every person deserves to be seen as more than a diagnosis.
We live in a world that often overlooks people with complex needs. But behind every label or condition is a human being – with personality, potential, and the same right to dignity and joy as anyone else.
That’s why we believe awareness must go hand in hand with compassion.
When you meet a family affected by WHS, don’t pity them. Understand them. Support them. Be kind. A bit of compassion – whether it’s a listening ear, a moment of patience, or simply learning more about their story – goes a long way.
Why We Care
At SPH, family is everything. We know the fierce love that drives parents to move mountains for their children. That’s why supporting WHST feels personal.
We’re backing this charity not because it ticks a CSR box, but because the work they do changes lives. It creates connection. It replaces fear with information. It offers light in the darkest moments.
And in our eyes, that’s worth supporting.
